description
This small-group express tour is the perfect introduction to Trieste top sights if you have limited time. The tour starts from the Old Town, which is home to the “real” Trieste, with its artisans, antique dealers, bookshops, potters, framers, and art galleries. It also boasts Roman ruins such as the Roman Theatre and an Augustan Triumphal Arch.
Walking along Trieste elegant seafront you'll then admire exquisite palaces of remarkable architectural value, many being Neo-Classical, and Italy’s largest square overlooking the sea, Piazza Unità d’Italia, site of the Town Hall.
Next you will encounter the Teatro Verdi Opera House, a mix of Milan's La Scala and Venice's La Fenice as both architects had a hand, and Piazza della Borsa with its stunning Stock Exchange Palace.
Your stroll through Trieste continues along the Theresian district, which gets its name from Maria Teresa, the much-loved Empress of Austria, who created this new part of the town. Here you can admire the Grand Canal, sided by splendid palaces, the imposing St. Anthony's Church, the adjacent Serbian-Orthodox Church and the interesting bronze statue portraying James Joyce crossing the Ponterosso bridge.
Finally, you'll transfer to Miramare to visit the romantic residence of Maximilian of Hapsburg and Charlotte of Belgium, and its wonderful park. Enshrined in the coastal rocks, the Castle of Miramare gives visitors the chance to admire the most enchanting views of Trieste and its gulf! |
